Bochum Preview
By: Abby | October 26th, 2007My very first match preview as a real live blogger. I should bronze it and send it to my mother, or something.

Anyway, the boys in blue are facing…well, another group of boys in blue. VfL Bochum, one of the approximately 8,000* Bundesliga clubs located in the Ruhr Valley, visit the Olympiastadion this Saturday. Bochum are coming off of nearly nicking a point off of Bayern Munich last round, going ahead after 10 minutes, with the Bavarians equalizing in the 35th but not being able to deal the final blow until twelve minutes from time. That being said, Bayern did have about 65 percent of possession during the game, but Bochum did prove that they can be difficult to break down.
This is a game that Hertha should win. It’s at home and Bochum are in 16th place. If we play the way we did in the first half against Werder Bremen (the part before the hara-kiri football), the points are staying in Berlin. It’s a good chance to make up some of the ground that’s been lost the past few games and snap this winless skid. I do feel that anything but a win will be disappointing, even though Bochum are desperate for points to get away from the relegation zone. Especially since that relegation-zone place is only 4 points away from where Hertha is right now in 10th. The game after this is Hamburg, so three points from Bochum at home is essential. Captain Friedrich says a draw will not be enough, so I hope the rest of the team listens to him.
As far as team news goes, Nigerian striker and scorer of that final nifty goal at last week’s loss Solomon Okoronkwo is a doubt with angina (or maybe the flu) and an adductor problem. Also, he’s only 20, which I had no idea about. He could be back, but it looks as if Andre Lima will be the one partnering Marko Pantelic up front.
I’m not going to make a prediction out of a personal superstition I have against them (I won’t even read them), but here’s hoping for a win. It’s not on TV over here so I won’t be able to watch, but I really want to be waking up to a win…
*this number is completely made up by me and should not be taken as fact, although I really wouldn’t be surprised.

4 out of 5 Ruhr Valley clubs are playing in the Bundesliga, while Essen is currently in the third division. Experts say this agglomeration of cities will melt into one megacity sooner or later, so this could help clean up the situation a bit, though it’ll be difficult to join Dortmund and Schalke fans and have them root for one club, so probably this city will still need at least two clubs.

Bochum is one of the few teams that make me laugh harder than Hertha. So here’s to hoping you win. (AHAHAHAHA Bochum.)

Ahh, so it only seems like 8,000. I was mapping out cities I’d heard of in my textbook and it seemed like they were all in that direction. So only 4 in the first two divisions…not even as bad as London. How many are Westphalian in general? That area always seemed to be heavily represented.
And yes, I can’t see Dortmund or Schalke fans agreeing to support one club…
