A Glamour Friendly, Minus All That Glamour
By: Abby | July 23rd, 2008Yesterday Hertha BSC took on the English giants Liverpool over at the Olympiastadion, a glamor pre-season friendly that the website had been hyping up for about two weeks with lots of tidbits about the I’m sure lovely city of Liverpool (I have never been, so I don’t have much to say). 51,684 spectators gathered to watch one of the world’s most famous sides, with their famous world-class players.
Well, some of them, anyway. Steven Gerrard was out with a minor injury, while the Spanish trio of Fernando Torres, Xabi Alonso, and Pepe Reina were still not back from their exertions in Swissaustria (I guess that those comedy routines of Pepe’s were difficult work?). But hey, Andriy Voronin was there! To be fair, we were still missing our skipper Arne Friedrich and Josip Simunic, who’s still “injured.” New signing Cicero wasn’t quite ready to start yet, and other new signing Maximilian Nicu was injured as well.
The Hertha side was the same starting 11 as the one that thrashed Nistru Otaci last week, while for all my joking Liverpool did feature some very good players, like Mascherano and Carragher. I’m in the process of acquiring the game (a lady never tells how), so I can’t say much about it, but it was a 0-0 draw and from several reports was not particularly interesting. The one moment of drama was a penalty, awarded right at the start of the second half, when Kaká fouled Voronin in the area (that I have seen, and it was pretty blatant). The Ukrainian stepped up to take it and the shot was saved by second goalkeeper Christian Fiedler, who had just been introduced at the half. So that’s nice.
It also seems as if Hertha looked bright and attacking, at least enough of the time for it to be commented on, which is nice to see. Of course the players want to impress on a big stage, but it’s nice to hear anyway.

It was also a chance for Lulu and his buddy Rafael Benitez to meet up in person- they’ve been in contact since Lulu’s Servette lost to Benitez’s Valencia in the 2002 UEFA Cup. Now they got to see each other face to face instead of on the phone- isn’t that sweet?
It’s not all nice news, though. If anyone was wondering what’s been going on with Bryan Arguez, the young American signed last January and supposedly earmarked for the first team, well, it may not be going so well. Apparently he’s been late for training and practice on more than one occasion, and while the Bild’s article is definitely sensationalistic (from them? Shocking!), it’s clearly not a good thing. Shape up, Bryan- you’ve got a good career ahead of you if you don’t screw up.

Yeah. And the Hertha mascot in between the two as well. It’s kind of cute. Really.Posted from

“51,684 spectators gathered to watch one of the world’s most famous sides, with their famous world-class players.”
That 8-1 win over Otaci was nice, but I think you are getting carried away a bit there.
“Sleepy pro ends career.”
When I read that I feared the worst. An injury, a sleep related illness or simple loss of motivation to become a pro footballer. Instead it was BILD trying to sell an article about a footballer who came late to training. Brilliant.

I was pretty proud of Hertha for holding ‘em to a draw. Hope they go far in the UEFA Cup this year.
Oh, Arguez… you have to put the second alarm clock on the other side of the room!

Hey, Jan, who wouldn’t pay the big bucks to see both Marko Pantelic and Marko Pantelic’s hair?
The Berliner Kurier had him rolling up with his girlfriend in his BMW, which made me a little worried that all this was going to his head, but I think it’s more that he’s still adjusting to a new country, new language, and a much higher standard of league…still, though, he’ll need a lot of discipline to make it.

Smile Abby! Your Tunisian striker is on the way
I’ll be writing about it later today. I hope he integrates well and gets a real chance to shine.Posted from

Wow, the Chermiti deal would get my vote for the longest transfer of the summer. Looking forward to see whether Lulu picked another winner.

BTW, in case you need some study material for pre-season performance assessments:
I came across some lengthy highlights of the Otaci match:

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x669sy_nistru-otaci-2_sportAnd then there’s a page which is currently posting the raw footage of the friendly between Hertha and Magdeburg:
http://www.eyep-tv.de/1.-bundesliga/hertha-bsc-berlin/From what I’ve read Lulu played a B-C squad, which might also start against Otaci. I’ve seen some short highlights on TV and would recommend to at least check out Raffael’s goal in the 35th minute (great combo with Cicero) and the goal by 17 year old academy newbie Lennart Hartmann in the 45th minute.
Lulu could have gotten lucky with this year’s academy players. Fardi already looked very confident against Otaci and Liverpool and Hartmann scored a beautiful goal on his debut…
