DFB-Pokal: What?

By: Abby | October 30th, 2007

Oh, Hertha.

I come home today and am greeted with this headline:

Wuppertaler knock out Hertha Berlin in German Cup shock

Wuppertaler SV Borussia, for those who hadn’t heard of them before (such as myself- I can’t claim to be an expert in anything), are competing in the third tier of German football, the Regionaliga Nord III. The regional third tier of German football, as Germany has two leagues (Nord and Süd) that make up the third level. And Hertha Berlin, after a decent performance at Bremen and a good performance at home, lost to them.

Having not watched anything from the game, I really can’t say much. Apparently Wuppertaler scored two goals in the last ten minutes, and as Hertha didn’t score any goals in the 90, that was enough to advance. The goals were scored after Josip Šimunić was sent off in the 75th minute (no word on how many cards it took).

I suppose every cup needs some slain giants, but couldn’t it have been someone else?

Ouch. Yeah, everyone likes to see some top-tier scalps in the domestic cups, but it sucks to have it happen to your team. Cup campaigns are a mixed bag anyway – now you can concentrate on the league. That’s always what I tell myself when my club goes out of one, anyway (as it likely will tomorrow).

Welcome to the DFB-Pokal. It’s not the most uncommon thing to happen in this competition. Still sad to see Berlin crashing out of the competition early again.

    I’m not surprised.

Hertha have always been shit at this cup, and this is yet another blow. To be honest, we should not have even been in this cup in the second round, Unterhaching should have had us, if they could finish.

Lovely welcome, thanks Jan. :P It’s cup competitions in general- something about the ‘magic of the cup’ or some nonsense, but I’m just feeling personally offended.

And yeah, Wayne, history is not on our side. It just seemed like it might have been luckier this year.

[...] I don’t know whether it makes a lot of sense for Hertha BSC Berlin fans to chant “We’re going to Berlin!”. I’ve never paid attention to Hertha fan chants. Fact is, only Hertha’s amateur side has reached a final of the DFB Pokal since moving to the Olympiastadion (lost to Bayer Leverkusen in 1993). Hertha’s cup pedigree so far can only offer two cup final appearances. One in 1977 where they lost against FC Cologne, and the other one in 1979, where they lost against Fortuna Düsseldorf. This woeful history won’t change for at least another season, as third division side Wuppertaler SV eliminated Hertha from the competition. Send your condolences to Abby over at the Hertha Offside.
