Down to Earth

By: Abby | November 3rd, 2008

In a quite spectacular way, but, as Dieter Hoeness so aptly put it, better one good thumping than several narrow defeats. And certainly, we’ve had a bit of luck through this quarter of a season. If one serious loss balances out those wins over Leverkusen and Stuttgart, I’m okay with it. (Especially since I’ve always had a soft spot for Bremen and Thomas Schaaf. If we have to lose 5-1 to anyone, and I hope we don’t, then at least it’s to get them out of their crisis.)

I do feel bad for poor Christopher Gäng, though. 20 is very young for a goalkeeper, and it’s awful to make one’s debut under such circumstances. With Drobny still sidelined for Thursday’s game at Metalist Kharkiv and Christian Fiedler far from recovered from his knee injury, I hope the kid can get over it. I’ve heard from other sources that he has talent- let’s hope he can prove it in a less traumatizing fashion. And as Bild so helpfully pointed out, many great goalkeepers have had traumatizing debuts.

I haven’t yet seen the game- it’s an anxious time for me. Hopefully, my head will be back into football after tomorrow. Go out and vote, countryfolk.

‘many great goalkeepers have had traumatizing debuts.’
Not surprised Bild mentioned Oliver Kahn. The former Bayern goalie once said that he never did well when he first moved to Bayern and at that time, people were already calling for his predecessor to come back. I remembered reading something like that somewhere.

OT: Not being an American myself, so I have been ‘relegated’ to being the role of just an outsider watching the developments of the presidential elections happening in your country Abby. :P We do have a fair amount of coverage of election day at where I live (it has been building for a while now). To admit, I’m always interested in such coverage. ;)

To combine the topic of goalkeepers and presidential elections:
I searched YouTube the other day, to find video evidence of the incident between Jens Lehmann and Roda Antar during the Stuttgart – Cologne match and the top result for “lehmann antar” was a Sarah Palin swimsuit competition clip. I repeated the search today and got normal results again.
