Gojko Kacar is Not A Brazilian

By: Abby | May 4th, 2009

No matter what Ray Hudson says.

But he’s a talented young prospect anyway, and he showed why with his equalizer Sunday against Hamburg. An absolute belter of a goal from 28 meters, the sort of goal that makes the normally calm Hudson excited. (I could not find his comments, but I was entertained. Edit: Jan found it> I don’t even know if Gojko’s ever been to Brazil, but he certainly never played for multiple clubs there.)

It was an out-of-the-blue sort of goal, one that had come right when I was starting to feel a bit depressed. Although we’d started brightly, it was Hamburg who got the first goal, after only 8 minutes. Olic’s cross found Marcell Jansen, who volleyed home past Drobny for the opening goal. It was a setback, but we didn’t look completely outclassed up against the UEFA Cup semifinalists. Trochowski hit the crossbar on 19 minutes, but other than that they didn’t really manage a shot on goal. We pushed, but couldn’t quite get past Frank Rost, who made a few good saves towards the end of the first half.

The second half was settling into being much like the first, with Hamburg being more dangerous and us having slightly more possession (I know, weird, huh?). And then, out of the blue, Gojko had his moment. Drobny sent a goal kick long, Pante controlled it lightly and sent it onto his countryman, who made no mistake.

That was all we needed to get a rare point from an away trip to Hamburg. Drobny made a good save towards the end of the game, and we held on for the draw. It’s being presented as us losing out on a chance to press for a title, which it technically is, but I’m happy with a draw out there. It’s been a really long time since we’ve got anything at the Nordbank, and with four games left in the season (where did the time go?) I’m happy not to lose. Especially since Arne still isn’t back.

The draw puts us a point over our opponents, and the resurgent VfB Stuttgart (who drew with Bielefeld), and puts us behind a winning FC Bayern and Wolfsburg. With games against Bochum and Köln next, our improbable dream of the Champions League might actually happen. Sure, it could just as easily not happen. But we’re nowhere near out of it yet.

Ray Hudson is right here: http://www.101greatgoals.com/videodisplay/2465787/

When I saw the highlights I gave him the benefit of the doubt and thought he may have talked about Hertha’s Brazilian players before and compared Kacar’s goal to them or something. :-)

He’d talked about Raffael taking a shot from distance a little while before, which segued into a fairly typical/nonsensical Hudson conversation about what Brazilians could do. And in the excitement he seems to have forgotten that Gojko was not one of the Brazilians who can take great shots from distance.

Go Ray – That is fantastic! “He’s bounced around Brazil! – Awesome!
This was my first ever Hertha away game and it was great fun. Super stadium, great atmosphere, lotsa Hertha fans made the trip and I’m completely happy with a draw in Hamburg. We are still in with a shot. Pinch me – is this really happening!

I personally thought we should have gone for a win, but everyone in the Bar 11 told me I was an idiot. Hope they’re right. In any case, we’re all heading to the stadium next Sat. for the Bochum match, which is, unbelieveably, almost sold out. Too bad Kacinho is banned for the match.

I think we did go for the win, we had the better of the second half. We just couldn’t get it done. But I was thrilled with one point.

Anyway Konnopke and Daggi, I just received the ticket for Koln in the mail Tuesday. Will either one of you be there Tuesday for the match or should I just mail you the money?

    Thanks.
