Hamburgled
By: Abby | November 5th, 2007Yes, it is part of the contract that everyone writing in English about the Bundesliga has to make food-related puns when Hamburger SV is concerned. It’s part of the experience.
Anyway, Hertha BSC Berlin travelled to the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg this weekend to take on that high-flying football team they’ve got there. Hamburg are second in the table and the first half showed their class. They were ahead by the fourth minute and it looked as if it would end up being a rout, with Hertha penned into their own half. Indeed, Hamburg could have been up three or four but for the post, which they managed to smack on several occasions.
Despite this, Hertha were only down by one when the half was over. And ahead by just one is not always a safe position. In the second half Hertha came back into it and grabbed a deserved equalizer from Patrick Ebert, the 20-year-old German U21 international finding the best way to celebrate his new contract.
It looked as if the club from the capital might hold on to claim a point that looked absolutely improbable after the first few minutes, but they were undone again by a late goal. It is a concentration issue- a van der Vaart (who looked excellent, I might add, and I can completely see why those big-money deals are said to be coming for him) corner wasn’t cleared properly, he got a chance to cross it back in, and Bastian Reinhardt got his head to it and sent it into the back of the net.
So another game lost by a late goal. It could have been worse but I can’t help feeling a little hard done by. It’s definitely something that needs to be looked at, and preferably before the next game, home against Hannover, which is definitely winnable.
Goal video after the jump.

…My sole knowledge of Raphael van der Vaart is that he and Zlatan Ibrahimovic hate each other. I might possibly have admired his football during the match if I wasn’t spending all my time giggling when he was onscreen. (What? It’s an involuntary reaction whenever Zlatan shows up in thought, word, or deed.)
Was a good game, though, even if Hertha was just a bit outplayed. I’m beginning to see why HSV is second in the table — although I hope they hit a slump in form soon (maybe Raphael and Zlatan might run into each other in a dark alley? We all know who’ll come out on top in that one) so Werder can advance to their rightful place. That is, hoping Tonigol breaks his leg.

Oh, Zlatan.
The other things I know about van der Vaart was that he tried to move to Valencia at the beginning of the season, but Hamburg blocked it because Valencia tried this like, a week before the transfer window closed, which means no time to find a replacement. So it was shot down and was pretty hilarious. (Apparently he wanted to move because that’s where his grandparents are. Suuuure, that’s all your reasoning…)
Yes. They’re definitely much better than last season. I’m pulling for Werder, too. I like them way more than Hamburg.

I have to say, I’m happy about the result. And in case you run out of Hamburg puns, when the two meet again next year, don’t forget that they have Vincent Kompany on the squad.

Hamburg are just the team that keeps on giving, aren’t they?
