Honestly, Jan, I'm not sure how we didn't draw this one. With all the chances we had winning it wouldn't have been surprising. But after re-reading that Honigstein article from August I'm reminded of how much worse it could be...

[...] 1. Berlin aren’t a good team and they aren’t a bad team either. Which is Abby’s way of avoiding the unflattering word mediocre. Though, the team that beat Hertha has been dubbed the best mediocre team in the Bundesliga, which is the best description of this season’s Schalke, that I’ve read so far. It should also give Abby hope, that Berlin can easily play in the Champions League quarter final and compete for the top spots in the Bundesliga, if they just get a bit better at being mediocre.
"But when Schalke have a lead, they know how to sit back on it."

That's a diplomatic way of putting it. You might also say, they don't know how to remain in control of a match, once they've taken a lead. It happened so often already this season. Hertha could have drawn this one.
