A Whirlwind of Absolutely Nothing

By: Abby | April 21st, 2008

I’ve been busy at work, so I haven’t had much time for updating here.

Fortunately, Hertha has helped me out by having absolutely nothing happen.

Seriously. Nothing. The Hertha newsletter has had a full issue on the DFB-Pokal final (held in Hertha’s lovely home ground) and has offered congratulations to the Berlin hockey team. The lead story of today’s issue was on the U-15s (although it was a good one, as they beat Tennis Borussia Berlin 4-0). Even my Google alerts has nothing. Things are just…rather quiet.

But, on the other hand, the quiet’s been good for us. The break the league took for the DFB-Pokal has allowed just about everyone to return to training. It’s looking likely that we’ll have a full squad- one that features Marko Pantelic, Raffael, and Steve von Bergen- for our trip to Hannover this weekend. Which makes me very happy, as without our two main attackers we haven’t been scoring goals, and missing one of our main defenders we’ve been letting them in as well.

Speaking of attackers, new father Andre Lima is staying for now, or something. We’ll see. I’m kind of hoping for Klasnic, but yeah.

Also, Dieter Hoeness wants play-offs. I guess to get people paying attention to Hertha? Whatever the case, we’re in no way ready for Europe right now. Just look at Nürnberg- too much too soon can be damaging, as much as I’d like us to do some exciting things like they did last season.

And apparently we have a Chinese guy. And a football school in Beijing. I guess that’s why there’s a Chinese option on the Hertha website.

Er…yeah. That’s about it at the moment. Hopefully as we get closer to a game, more things will happen.

Well, I would say Nuremberg were ready for Europe. They just needed two more minutes to knock Benfica out of the cup. They weren’t ready to return to their boring Bundesliga everyday life though. Too bad, but I haven’t given up hope. I have some sympathies for the squad although I lost a lot for the management. And relegation would just completely disband a great team and I guess quite a few players would leave the Bundesliga and Nuremberg would have to start all over again. /offtopic

Otherwise there really isn’t too much coming out of the Hertha camp. The four letter tabloid tried to cook up a conflict between Pantelic and Favre (if Pante stays, Favre leaves kind of bs). Anyway, should Dieter Hoeneß boycott the opening ceremony of that football school or would that be the wrong signal? ;-)

Ready for Europe or the Bundesliga, but not both- the Premiership saw the same thing with Bolton, in which they battled well throughout Europe before realizing they were in a relegation battle at home. The squad got stretched too thin and wasn’t ready to compete on two fronts, which is necessary. Although Bolton’s managed to claw themselves out at the moment (sigh). So I guess there’s hope for Nuremberg yet.

Yeah. It’s been really quiet. Even the Bild had to make up lame stories. And hahaha. I guess it’s not quite Chinese government sponsored, so…

Good point about the squad depth, which is generally important for European competitions. Though, I think there’s a lot of psychology in play in Nuremberg’s case as well.

You should bank on Hertha collecting a few yellow and red cards in the next matches. And the fans could probably throw flares around. Because Hertha could be going to Europe through a back door. The UEFA Fair Play Ranking awards three extra UEFA Cup spots. I think seven or eight leagues with the best Fair Play Ranking take place. The best ranked team from each league, which isn’t playing in Europe already, takes part in a lottery which awards two of the three spots. The one remaining spot is automatically given to the currently best ranked league. And Hertha seems to be pretty high in that Bundesliga Fair Play table. Though, since this table isn’t public this is only speculation.

Hey, I am an American studying abroad in Berlin right now and am heading home soon. How do you watch the Bundesliga games in the US? Online?

Many of the games are on GOLTV. I’m watching the crappy game against HSV at the moment.

Ben is right, Phil. There are a lot of games on GolTV, although I must warn you most of them don’t feature Hertha. Unless they’re playing a bigger team, like HSV. There are ways to watch online, unfortunately, they don’t work with my Mac.

And yes, Jan, for some reason they’re showing it again. GolTV has to show something all day, I suppose…

Thanks for the help. I was actually at the HSV game last week and I am glad I didn’t have to pay for the tickets (as they were provided through my program).

You know the best thing about being a Hertha fan is the swinging of emotions. Sure I could have moved to Munich and been a Bayern fan and been happy 95% of the time. But with Hertha you get it all, Ecstacy - normally in the first few games of the season, Frustration - As the wheels start to fall off mid season, Anger - why are they so shit?, leading finally to resignation - Well at least there are other teams worse than us and hell, even if we got into the UEFA Cup only 10,000 people come to the stadium to watch a game at 5 in the afternoon anyway. And that is why I’ll be back with my season ticket for a 4th season next year.
