Hey, I Thought We Were Friends

By: Abby | November 27th, 2007

After taking a first-half lead against our friends in Karlsruhe, two second-half goals condemned us to our fourth successive away defeat. Hertha has now been knocked down to ninth (from seventh) while Karlsruhe continue their surprising success and now have a firm grip on fourth.

Karlsruher on topI’ve only watched the first half so far (I was busy with family obligations) and I’m bringing myself to watch the second. The first half wasn’t terrible- we rode our luck several times, but we looked good on several occasions as well. Pantelic’s goal is worth watching without a doubt, and the powers-that-be must be absolutely crazy to think of letting him go to Chelsea for £2.5 million. I know he’s 29, but he’s most of our offense and Chelsea can afford more.

Sadly, the goal didn’t hold and KSC fought back, scoring two goals in the second half. Again, a lack of concentration let us down. Karlsruhe’s second goal came off a counter-attack, lamented by Lulu and some others.

But we’ve got to put it behind us and prepare for the home game against Bayer Leverkusen next weekend. Leverkusen are a good, solid team up to their customary 5th place on the table. They also feature young goalkeeper René Adler, who I have a massive crush on. I’ll discuss that more as we get closer.

A stylish PattyIn other Hertha news, bright young star Patrick Ebert (the one with the illegal shirt) may need surgery on a groin problem. A serious injury to Ebert would be a big blow- as said on the Hertha website there, he’s been one of the finds of the season and has recently been rewarded with a new contract. Cross your fingers in hope it won’t be too bad.

Also, the Hertha BSC U19’s defeated 1860 Munich’s U19 to go through to the semifinals of the DFB-Pokal. Congrats to the kids!

There’s also a lot of news surrounding comments made at the annual general meeting of Hertha held this weekend (namely, that a lot of comments were against general manager Dieter Hoeneß). I’ll have more on that tomorrow when I sort it all out properly. It seems that 3 months not speaking German does not improve my already not-that-great grasp of the language, fancy that…

Goals from Friday (thanks Jan!), if you’re so inclined.

I second ben’s opinion. And in case your German and Google Translate let you down, don’t shy away from asking a native speaker. ;-)

Thanks, you guys! :) And I may have to take you up on that, Jan. I need to find a study or speaking group here, I’m getting really rusty…and I’m also finding that I kind of miss it, as much as I bitched about the classes when I was in them.

Just don’t try to order from the Werder webshop without a genuine German on hand to translate, that’s all I’m saying.
