Hey, Remember That Swedish Guy?

By: Abby | August 6th, 2009

You know, the one I said signed for Lazio and that our Lazio blogger said signed for AZ Alkmaar?

Turns out neither of us were right, and as of today, he’s a Hertha Berlin player.

His name is Rasmus Bengtsson and it’s got all the signs of a transfer coup. AZ are the reigning champions of Holland, Lazio are a club full of tradition. They’re not the only teams said to have been interested in the 23-year-old. There were rumors around Aston Villa, and his agent claimed interest from Spanish clubs as well. Hamburg also had a mention or two in there. But he’s not with any of those clubs. He’s ours.

He signed on the cheap from Trelleborg FF, as he was at the end of his contract- the fee was apparently something in the €700,000 range, which is an excellent deal for the highly-rated central defender. He impressed at this summer’s U21 championships in his home country, but apparently we’ve been watching him since before that. He’s also made one appearance for the senior Swedish side. At 6′1″, he’s a big guy, and Lulu seems very pleased when describing him.

So welcome, Rasmus. He’ll be wearing the number 22 shirt. It may be too soon to see him against a shaky Hannover, but I’m sure we’ll be seeing a lot of him in the future.

Here’s hoping he can help to plug the gaping hole in our defence since Big Joe left. Good luck Rasmus!

On paper, he looks like a steal. On the pitch…we’ll see. But not on Saturday. He’s not even among the possibles.
