It Pours
By: Abby | April 15th, 2009As the spring approaches and the Seattle weather turns to the sort of thing that we don’t tell outsiders about, all the clouds and gloom are coming instead from Hertha Berlin.
Saturday’s game against Hanover didn’t fail to stop our bad run of form; it just compounded it, with a 2-0 loss. That’s now three in a row and we’re certainly in a funk. True, that means we’re in fourth and just two points off the Champions League places, but with everyone else (Hamburg, Bayern, and Wolfsburg, with even the chance of Stuttgart pulling another Stuttgart) in good form, and us in bad form, it’s hard to build up hopes of it again. Right now, just the UEFA will be good enough.
And if the loss wasn’t bad enough, a stupid red card incurred by Andriy Voronin – in the last minute, so we can’t even blame it on having ten men – means that we’re without him for three games. True, his scoring clip isn’t quite what it was a few weeks ago, but it’s still a major blow to our hopes of keeping him.
Sigh. It’s enough of a reason to be glum, right? Sulk, sulk.
In other news, we’ve been linked with another Swiss player, Philippe Senderos of Arsenal (currently on loan at AC Milan). He’d be a replacement in case Simunic decides to to a runner over the summer. And while I should probably be skeptical or something, considering he’s never settled at Milan and my fellow Arsenal fans don’t tend to like him…damn it, I want this to happen. Everyone has players that they like for completely irrational, un-explainable reasons, and Senderos has always been mine. Plus, with a manager that’s behind him (like perhaps the one who first played him?) he actually can be a very good central defender.
And hey, next weekend’s game is live on GolTV! That’s good news, right? Right?

Hi Abby, I’m with you on Senderos. He’s not good enough for Arsenal, but would do well with the Bundesliga’s slower style of play. As for this season, ironically, our chances will come down to a large extent to much-maligned Marco Pantelic. Lulu must be grinding his teeth!

I think he would, yeah. And I think Favre would be good for him. When he’s got a good run in the team he does well.
And it’s only fitting that it all comes down to Pante, isn’t it?

Yeah, things are going really badly now. Bremen will be brimming with confidence when they come in. I guess we have to hope for the best.
