Lactate?

By: Abby | December 6th, 2007

First and foremost: this cannot possibly mean what I’m picturing. Can anyone versed in sports medicine (or possibly in whatever German phrase they might be trying to translate) explain to me why I have an image of the team with breast pumps hooked up?

Anyway, some bits and bobs of news for you all on this fine Thursday.

Hertha conducted a study on their links to the Nazi regime, and found them rather indifferent. There was no real enthusiasm for the Nazis, but there wasn’t a whole lot of resistance, either. The players for the most part tended to have no alliance to the Nazis. However, the bosses were all either Party members or joined up in the course of the period. In general, though, Hertha had very little to do with the Nazis. The biggest link is still that they play in the Olympiastadion, designed by Hitler’s chief architect and site of the 1936 Olympics (Hertha moved there when they joined the newly-formed Bundesliga in 1963).

The Gilberto saga goes on. His agent may finally be traveling to Berlin this week to meet with the Hertha officials, but the “tired and broken-down” 31-year-old is wanting a lot from the team, such as more pay and less training. He’s not a young man anymore, certainly. He does still mean a lot to the team, but how much?

He will get a full rest in the upcoming winter break, though, along with the rest of the team. No friendlies or indoor tournaments, just 17 days off (with individual training routines, I assume). I approve and hope it does the boys well.

Also, Dieter Hoeneß has taken the boys to task in the hopes that they’ll step it up for the next two games. But he also said something that I appreciate, namely that Marko Pantelic is not for sale, especially not this winter. We all know that means nothing, but I hope it’s true. Selling him in the winter transfer window would be ridiculous. Who else will score the goals?

Nürnberg on Sunday is the next game. I’ll have a match preview up tomorrow, hopefully.

That’s brilliant — I think it’s about lactic acid rather than breast-feeding, but we can always hope …

Engaging in a study about their own Nazi past is fascinating — was the club prompted by questions or allegations, or did they do it entirely on their own? And how likely is it that the study was thoroughly done, and not just self-serving window dress? (That’s an honest question, I know nothing.)

Giggle. German boys must be built differently.

I think somebody lost something in translation.

Martha’s correct: it’s a test for measuring the amount of lactic acid in the blood. It’s called a lactate test.

Martha: the article fails to point out that Hertha are opening a club museum, and they hired a historian from the University of Berlin to examine the club’s role during the Nazi regime, to be able to chronicle that period.

When I read the title of this post, I immediately thought it was a doping scandal gone wrong. I guess I’m relieved…Still, I’m trying to imagine a supermasculine athlete saying he needs a lactate test.

Yeah my sense of humor is really immature.

Oh, mine too, Inara. Hence ‘lactate test’ being the lead story of my news roundup. And me giggling at it. But thank you, Ben and Martha, for explaining what they’re actually doing. (Although it’s way less comic.)

And thanks Jan, for the extra bit of explanation. I swear, I’d be lost without you.
