Only an Election
By: Abby | May 27th, 2008Sorry for the lapse in posting, but I’ve been focused on a major European competition. No, not the Euros (that’s later), but something just as competitive- the Eurovision Song Contest. Russia won, for those keeping track, and also had the tiniest ice rink I’ve ever seen. For those who don’t know me very well, I have a serious fascination with the Eurovision- is it tragically ludicrous, or is it ludicrously tragic? Either way, this happened.
While I’ve been gone, Hertha elected a new president. His name is Werner Gegenbauer, which I think is an awesome name to say. He was also the only candidate standing, so it’s a good thing he won, then. He says the right things about raising Hertha’s profile, qualifying for the UEFA Cup for real, and eventually, someday, challenge for the title.
What’s more interesting to me is the financial statements- a profit of €6 million and a debt reduction to €30 million. It points to, somewhere, there being financial responsibility at the club. Which is something I like to see in my football clubs, and something that has been somewhat lacking at Hertha. A few more years of this and talk about challenging for the title won’t sound so odd.
And in general transfer-like news, this website says that das Bild said that we’ve signed Armine Chermitti, the young Tunisian striker. We’ve been linked to him for quite a while, since the last transfer window at least, with multiple reports that we’ve agreed terms. He’s supposed to be quite decent- he’d better be, if we’re really paying €2 million for him. We’ve also now officially signed Valeri Domovchiyski from Levski Sofia for €1 million- I guess that goal against Bayern was worth it…
Our other loanee, Rudy Skacel, is officially still a loanee, but he’s also been called up to the Czech Republic squad for the Euros. However, Steve von Bergen has had to withdraw from the Swiss squad after a hand injury. I can only imagine how upsetting that is for him, so good luck, Steve.

Amine Chermiti is a lot better than “decent.” I can’t guarantee a breakout year in his first season because sometimes it takes time to adapt to a new team and a new continent but he’s got quality, lots of it. You’ll be amazed by his tenacity and his sheer pace. Not to mention his goalscoring instincts. You might have seen this already but this play pretty much sums up his never say die attitude:

Most importantly though he’s a winner. He was the only domestic African player shortlisted for the the African Ballon D’or and was the leading scorer in last year’s African Champions league. Anyways, greetings from the Tunisia World Cup Blog. I’ll be following Chermiti’s progress with great interest. I’m sure he’ll do well for you.

Wow, your posts span anything from the Eurovision Song Contest to Death Cab for Cutie. I’m impressed.
Also thanks for all the info on Chermiti Rami! I’m looking forward to see him in the Bundesliga. Given that Lulu wanted him since his Zurich days, he must have a serious believe in his skills as well.

Awesome, Rami!
Thanks a lot. I’m pretty excited now. Lulu’s got an eye for these things. I hope you’re right on Chermiti.Posted from
