Road Warriors?
By: Abby | October 6th, 2008Four played, three won. That’s the Hertha BSC Berlin away record so far in the 2008-2009 season. To put that in perspective, we won 3 away games in all of last season. It’s only October and we’ve already made that. And to make things even more bizarre, we’ve yet to win at home.
Saturday’s game against Bayer Leverkusen was one that we never should have won. Leverkusen had 69% of the possession, 13 shots on goal compared to 3, and 27 total shots compared to 6. We won on an 89th minute goal from ex-Leverkusener (always good to have one of those) Andriy Voronin, who opened his Hertha scoresheet, and an absolutely unreal performance from Jaroslav Drobny. By most accounts, it was our only real attack of the game. As an Arsenal fan, being on the other side of a result like that is kind of thrilling and rather surreal.
Combined with the 2-0 win over Frankfurt for the opening game of the season and the 1-0 against Mönchengladbach, it means that Hertha top the away table. Which is just…weird. Not that I’m arguing. But it’s just not normal, is it?
Back in Switzerland, Lulu’s FC Zürich were known for their excellent away form, topping the away tables in 2006 and 2007- but they also topped the actual table in those seasons. The Hertha situation is a bit different.
So what can be said? It’s certainly impressive, but it’s also entirely possible that there’s no real reason to be excited right now. After all, the home form is pretty poor, our first two wins were against teams who are now propping up the table (seventeenth and eighteenth respectively), and Saturday’s win probably shouldn’t have happened. Coming up even against a very troubled Bayern Munich (who are, in fact, two places behind us now) we got trounced.
On the other hand, might as well enjoy it while it lasts, right?
