Sweet Sixteen
By: Abby | October 23rd, 2008Or, Why We Probably Still Need Marko Pantelic.
Benfica heads back to Lisbon with their record of never winning in Germany intact, drawing 1-1 in front of 26,144 at the Olympiastadion. Benfica were the first to score, in the 51st minute, but Hertha equalized and that was how the game ended. Hertha were far from cowed by the Portuguese record champions, and by all accounts could have actually won the game if their finishing had been better. (Which makes it much like most other games played at the Olympiastadion this season.)
And the goalscorer? One Marko Pantelic, who came off the bench to score an equalizer eight minutes later. Proving that the power struggle between him and Lulu will probably never end. Because when no one else is scoring, when we just can’t finish, somehow Pante will find a way. That’s why he’s scored so many goals for us, and why, despite all the drama, we can’t let him go. At the moment, at least, he’s saying the right things, talking about how the club was right to suspend him and he accepted the decision, but I highly doubt this is the last we hear of it.
Anyways. Not a bad start to what’s going to be a difficult group for us. A home win would have been better, since this is, as said, a difficult group all around, but at least it’s not a home loss.
Now, onto Dortmund and the hope of revenge…

Last night was a real travesity. We had so many chances that we just couldn’t convert. These games really highlight our lack of a killer instinct. We just don’t have the capacity to deliver that final blow after so much good work and theng bang, out of nothing Benefica gets a goal.
