That’s the noise of the season crashing back to Earth.
It would come when I was starting to believe; when everything seemed to be falling into place and we would make things happen. I’d gone the whole season without letting myself get too far ahead of ourselves. I wouldn’t think of us as title candidates, I’d continue to believe that a UEFA Cup place would be a great achievement. But things were going well, we kept winning, everyone was taking note of us…and I started to believe.
In fact, I think it was right before the Stuttgart game. And even after the Stuttgart game, I was feeling all right. Losing on the road to Stuttgart, a team who looks to finish well as usual, is not so bad, and we’ve bounced back from defeats decently.
A poor game at home last weekend, though, against Dortmund (a traditional powerhouse, but hardly the league’s toughest team this year and with only one win after the break) has made me worried. The home form has been sustaining us, and it’s starting to seem like the fall all the pundits were predicting is starting to happen.
And then the most depressing news of all- our captain and one of two players who seriously could not get injured if things were going to go well (the other being goalkeeper Jaroslav Drobny) will be out for at least 4-6 weeks with a knee injury. This means that it’s highly possible he could miss the rest of the season. It’s a massive blow to our high hopes- the defense is not nearly as solid when Arne Friedrich is not part of it. And we need that solid defense.
With eight games left, I’m hoping that we can hang on somehow to a European place. The games aren’t easy- we’re away at Hamburg and Hoffenheim and have to take on Bremen and Schalke at home. Right now, my one possible source of hope is that my pessimism might do what my optimism did before, and turn things around.

The only real challenging match that I see for Hertha on the list is at HSV. TSG haven’t won in 8 matches, and Schalke and Bremen are flat awful this season.
Too bad about Arne, too.

Bremen and Schalke have also both beaten us this season, Bremen pretty badly. I wish I shared your optimism for us…

Chin up Abby, we had a fantastic few weeks that can’t be taken away from us, the same for Hoffenheim – it doesn’t matter what happens at the end, for a few weeks we really believed, some fans go their whole lives and never get near that feeling – Frankfurt anyone?
Arnies injury is a big blow. I’m sure we will bounce back, I just hope other teams haven’t figured us out too much. The style of play from Dortmund was very similar to Stuttgart and if others follow we could be in trouble.

Yes, you’re right, Paul. I just needed to have my sulk.
