Totally Not Happening. Oh Wait, Make That Totally Happening.

By: Abby | January 31st, 2008

When I left for work this morning, everywhere (including the English version of the Hertha website, which has yet to change) was reporting that the Gilberto transfer had somehow collapsed and we would be paying his salary for another six months, and then not getting any transfer fee for him when he left in the summer. Which made me sigh, roll my eyes, metaphorically throw up my hands, and then leave for work.

When I got back from work (okay, when I checked transfer new surreptitiously from work), I found that it was back on. And that it had happened. The fee is undisclosed, but rumored to be around £1.9 million. The Tottenham website (and it made me feel very weird to go there) claims he had to go back to Germany to get some paperwork. Whatever the case and despite the dramatics, he’s gone now. I’d wish him luck but I don’t really want Tottenham to have any. Sorry.

Gilberto is and was a good player, and has done well for Hertha, but he’s had a bad season, a lot of which could be believably blamed on a lack of motivation. It didn’t seem like he wanted to be at Hertha- perhaps he wanted more money, more potential of silverware (although he did move to Tottenham, so there goes that theory- okay, I’ll stop now), more recognition, who knows. But when a player is unhappy at a club he needs to move on, no matter the memories. So I’m happy with this.

His replacement will be the Czech Rudolf ‘Rudi’ Skacel, formerly of Southampton, who I know absolutely nothing about except what I’ve read on Wikipedia. He’d been at Olympique Marseilles and Hearts before that, following Hearts manager George Burley to Southampton. His form at Hearts was apparently impressive for the year he was there. He’s a direct replacement, a 28-year-old left-sided midfielder and occasional left-back, and the deal is for a loan with option to buy at the end of the season. The first Southamption fan website that came up in Google said he hasn’t really lived up to his billing there, but they’re still not pleased with him leaving. But I guess he can’t follow Burley to the Scottish national team, being Czech and all.

Other than that, doesn’t look like anything else happened, which means no Kryznowek and no Fejsa.

Maybe.

It was all a bit of a cock-up, but then it wouldn’t be a Spurs transfer without drama.

Being as I am now one of the contributors to the Bundesliga Offside, you might want to treat Spurs with better regard, or I may be forced to be mean in my weekly “die Tabelle” report on a certain Berlin club ;) :P

Or a Hertha one, for that matter. (Did you sell the “Ghetto Kid” or not? I heard rumors he was off to Villa.)

Aww. I’ll try to be nice. ;) Maybe. If you keep buying players we don’t really want for high transfer fees, I’ll warm up pretty fast. ;) :D

Aww. I’ll be good now that the games are back, I promise. :D My Frankfurt preview has no EPL in it whatsoever!
