We Have the Fun Names

By: Abby | July 14th, 2008

Lulu, for one, is a great name. We’ve also got a Kaká, which will, as stated, never get old. Fabian Lustenberger is also a fabulous name (and he has such pretty curls). And we might be adding a new awesome name to that list.

Berliner Morgenpost reports that we’ve already signed Cicero, from Fluminense. As something of a history geek, this is a name that will definitely entertain me all season. I don’t know much about him, but according to that little blurb there he’s a left-sided attacking midfielder and a good header of the ball, all of which are good things. I’m not announcing it as done until it ends up on the Hertha website (just look at the Ljubomir Fejsa story- for those paying attention, he’s signed for Partizan Belgrade in his home country), but we may very well have a new midfielder.

Not only that, but we have an actual game to play this week. I know! Seriously. We’re not even really done with pre-season- Arne Freidrich isn’t even back yet (although Joe Simunic is, despite his hopefully-impending transfer elsewhere), and the team is still in Austria until Wednesday. Plus, we still have the more glamorous warm-up friendlies left. Liverpool isn’t until the 22nd, while this Mallorca Summer Cup thing with Newcastle United, Hannover 96, and hosts Real Mallorca isn’t until the first of August. And yet, we’ve got our first UEFA Cup qualifier on Thursday.

We’ve played a few friendlies already. The most recent have been a pair of 0-0 draws to Hapoel Tel Aviv and FC Copenhagen. Hopefully, we’ll do better against Nistru Otaci, and just as hopefully, I’ll be able to get a good preview up before then.

Hopefully the extra experience playing some other great European teams will give Hertha a boost in the league this year. I’d like to see them fight it out for a Uefa cup spot with Wolfsburg.
