We’re Not Dead Yet
By: Abby | April 20th, 2009Just when it seemed like the dreams were dead – 70 minutes into what looked like our fourth loss in a row – they showed a flicker of life. After the full 90, they think they’ll go for a walk.
The first half was one of those games where it looked like proof that our luck had deserted us. Despite having the slightly better chances of a slow start, with Cicero hitting a header against the post and restored to the starting lineup Gojko Kacar missing a decent chance, it was Werder who took the lead. A corner came in, it got all bounced around the area, and Per Mertesacker managed to get some part of his 6′7″ body to the ball to put it past the line. It was one of those moments when I could just sense a goal coming- I could tell it would be bad just as soon as Drobny got into a funk about the corner being given (he thought he’d caught the ball before it crossed the line).
Werder had chances to make it more in the second half, but instead, we decided to do something about it. And while the story up to now had been about the return of Marko Pantelic to the starting lineup, he was withdrawn after an hour, when we were still behind. Lulu made his subs fairly early, all around the hour mark, yanking off Maximillian Nicu for Lukasz Piszczek, young Bulgarian Valeri Domovchiyski replaced Pantelic, and importantly for the end, replacing defender Marc Stein with striker Amine Chermiti. The subs certainly did something, jarring the side into action, and soon we were level.
It took a towering defender of our own to pay them back- the hulking Josip Simunic. (Per Mertesacker is a lot of things, and I like him a lot as a player, but you can hardly describe him as hulking, can you?) Raffael, who had a fine game in my opinion, got the ball out to Pal Dardai, who lifted in an excellent cross right onto Joe’s head. His looping header beat Tim Wiese to the inside corner and we were celebrating an equalizer from this unlikely source. And that wasn’t all- just when we were settling for a draw, up popped little Amine Chermiti (he’d hit the post earlier, actually), who stole the ball from Naldo, passed the ball to Raffael, who fired in a fantastic goal from 20 meters out. That was the 87th minute, and the score held. 2-1, our losing streak snapped, and the dream of the Champions League back on.
Chermiti deserves a lot of credit for our revival, and Lulu noticed, calling him “the future of Hertha” and hinting that he could start Friday against Hoffenheim. The kid came in with a lot of hype, but an injury cut into his settling-in time, and once he recovered he still had to adjust to the Bundesliga, and to Hertha. But with Marko Pantelic failing to give Lulu a good reason to force him back into the starting lineup, and Voronin injured, it may be time for him (and the equally-young, although less-discussed, Domovchiyski) to show what he’s got.
So things are good again. In fact, things are so good that we might even have Arne Friedrich back by Hamburg. I think it’s still a bit of a long shot to have him back so soon, but it’d be great to have him play again before the season concludes. I don’t need to tell you how important he is to us.
More good news: despite the string of losses, the Olympiastadion was packed. Sure, Bremen has big names that people like to see, but everyone knows it’s still nice.

We were lucky in a number of respects. Bremen didn’t care about the outcome (no Diego) and all three goals were pretty fortunate. But the spirit was there, and it was nice to see Chermiti get involved. Hopefully, the win will put us in a good frame of mind for the away matches against Hoffe and Hamburg.

Hey- it’s just nice to have the luck back!

Yes, lucky but those points were necessary with the two fixtures on the road without Voronin.
Abby, I have a question. I am going to the away match against FC Koln. I live in the US and I emailed Hertha and they said I couldn’t purchase a ticket through them since I need a German bank account. I emailed FC Koln and they told me they couldn’t sell me a seat in the visitors’ section. Do you have any more suggestions?

I would suggest ebay.de, tickets should pop up rather soon, question is, at what day do you arrive in Cologne?
Because the shipping to the US will probably not be an option, if you can find the right seller, you could be handed your ticket in front of the stadium.Although flying over without a ticket does suck a little, on the other hand, if you arrive early enough around the stadium you should be able to buy a ticket right there. (mabye relatively expensive though)
Hertha did stopp the Germany wide sale for guest area tickets today. Official tickets are only available in Berlin from tomorrow on. I live in Munich, but next week I go to Berlin over the weekend and could buy you a ticket if you want (hoping it will not be sold out by that time).
Just email me, if you prefer that option.
(BTW it’s fairly embarassing for my club to not be able to figure something like that out, I tought with credit cards and the internet anything would be possible today, but no, not for Hertha fans outside of Germany, thanks to our ticket department…)

Yeah, it is a little ridiculous, especially considering Berlin as a city. There are so many tourists and expats living there that I’ve always felt the club should reach out for more- they’ll buy tickets and just possibly carry fandom back to wherever they’re from. Being able to buy tickets online with just a credit card would be a good place to start. (I bought my tickets in person, when I was there.)

I’ve taken a look at Hertha’s website and their away ticket page is really quite oldschool. You need to send a fax with your order and bank details. It’s probably time to give Dieter Hoeness a little update on credit cards and paypal.
Another idea: maybe a fanclub or the ultras could help organise something?

Well, in any case, like I said, I offer my help.
Just reply here or via email.

BTW the ticket is in the guest area standing section. I don’t know if you like this, be aware there might be some really drunk and agressive fans in there. Be sure to wear blue and white or a Hertha jersey.

Good to see in your report a positive mention for Raffael. He’s one of my favourite players, and I think he gets a fair amount of unfair criticism levelled at him.
As for buying tickets from abroad… I’ve done so via the Hertha website with no problems. I usually buy tickets on the day, but as the stadium has been busy lately I’ve gone ahead and bought some in advance, for collection on the day at the stadium.

Based on these comments, it’s great to see I’m not the only Hertha fan in the UK! I live in London, but I’m in Berlin every few weeks.
If any of you are London based and fancy a pint at any time, it’d be great to meet another Hertha fan over here. Prove to me I’m not the only one!

A quick (and late) translation:
“Hello Santosh!
I’ve sent the ticket on its journey. Please be patient.. the women at the post office said 3-5 days! We can meet in Cologne then!
I only just returned from Hertha’s game in Hoffenheim at 7 in the morning. Incredible, not a good game but a win nonetheless ha ha. You will have a lot of fun with us in the guest block.
Blue-white greeting from Daggi”Posted from

So na dann viel viel Spass und Gruss DagmarPosted from

Hi Santosh!
Neither one of us will be in Cologne, Daggi unfortunately hast to work on short notice.
As for the money, she told me you should simply mail it cash (no coins if possible) in an envelope to her address when you are in Germany (from the hotel, for example).
She also sends you best wishes and good luck for the game in Cologne! Have fun!
But there is one thing you have to promise her…3 points for Hertha! Hopefully you will be good luck!
Last thing, if you ever want to visit a game in Berlin, contact her, she would let you stay at her place and organize a ticket any time for the Olympic Stadium.
Greets from Germany! Have a nice trip! Enjoy the game!
