Why I Love Lucien Favre
By: Abby | July 30th, 2009Let’s face it- I’m a hopeless fangirl when it comes to our coach. You know it, I know it, it’s all over the damn blog. There’s something about his method and style that gels perfectly with what I want the coach of my football club to be like.
The most recent example of this: he’s having the team practice penalties for Saturday. Saturday, I might remind you all, we’re playing against Preußen Münster, a team in the Regionaliga West, one of the regional leagues that make up the German fourth division. And yet, Lucien Favre knows this is still a cup game; knows that any team is still a threat this early, and has the team practicing penalties just in case.
I don’t know, maybe it’s just the heat (hottest in Seattle, woo!) getting to me, but I like that.
Anyway. We’ve decided against both Ayew and Persic. I shouldn’t read about trialists- I’m way too soft-hearted. The thought of kids getting their hopes up, then rejected, makes me sad. But that’s how football goes.
Instead, we’re apparently taking a look at Swedish defender Rasmus Bengtsson, who at least has a great name. The 23-year-old impressed at the U-21 Euro championships in his home country, and since his contract is nearly up, he’d be cheap- €500,000. We’re not the only ones interested, of course, with AZ Alkmaar, PSV Eindhoven, Sevilla, Real Zaragoza, and and Everton all allegedly interested.
But hey, we have Lucien Favre, right?

The SV Wehen v Wolfsburg game is on at 4:30am in Australia. Hence, have no choice but to set the timer on the DVD recorder and watch it when I wake up. In true Lucien Favre style, I am adding an extra hour to the timer, in the highly unlikely, but still possible case that the match will go to penalties!
