Like Buses
By: Abby | January 29th, 2009As the saying goes, “_____” is like buses- wait forever, and then they all come along at once. (This seems to be very true in Seattle.) We can now put Hertha BSC Berlin transfers in the January window in the blank.
Just a few days after Marko Babic was revealed as a Hertha player, we’ve added another one- Leandro Curfré He’s a 30-year-old Argentinian defender, and we got him from Monaco. Before that, he’d spent his entire European career in Italy, first at Roma and then on loan to Siena. He’s been at Monaco since 2006 and has a Hertha contract until the end of the year. Also, his birthday is the same as mine.
All well and good. But that’s not the interesting part. The interesting part is that Leandro Cufré managed to be the only player red-carded at a World Cup match after the whistle had already blown. And how did he do it?
In the way that is guaranteed to endear him to the people of his new country- kicking German international defender Per Mertesacker in the nuts after the Germany-Argentina mach in the World Cup, in that big fight at the end that ended up keeping Torsten Frings out of the semifinal. Cufre may have been intending to get Tim Borowski- also tall, blond, and German- but even so, that’s not quite the right reaction when you’re on the world stage.
It’s not the only time Cufré’s been in trouble- Bild has helpfully compiled some of his highlights. And the reason he’s at Hertha in the first place is that he was stripped of his Italian passport, the Italian government claiming that his was one of 150 Argentinian footballers whose passport had been forged. AS Monaco’s quota of non-EU players had already been used up, so Cufré couldn’t play there any more.
It’s…well, it’s at least entertaining. And while he seems a bit crazy, he was in the Argentinian squad in the first place to kick Per Mertesacker, and that’s not easy to get into. The deal is not bad as well- free transfer from Monaco, €600,000 salary. He can play anywhere across the defense and will likely come in handy. It’s another creative deal, much like Babic- a player of a certain amount of quality who’s lost his way a bit. A gamble, but all transfers are.
At least it’ll make Werder Bremen games interesting?

The bus thing is totally true–I used to live in Seattle (in Queen Anne) and took the bus everyday to work downtown.
