Never Mind

By: Abby | January 22nd, 2009

Remember that Australian I was talking about?

Forget it. His foot injury proved too problematic, so we’re still on the market. And my peculiar jinx- of ruining about-to-happen transfers by discussing them- lives on.

But, I’ve got to discuss them, jinx or no jinx. So I soldier on.

The next likely solution is Marko Babic, because we like the name Marko here at Hertha. The 27-year-old Croatian is unsettled at Real Betis, where he went after seven years at Bayer Leverkusen. He can play either in midfield or in defense on the left side, the sort of “polyvalent” player that Lulu likes. And while he seems to be very interested in a Hertha move, I have written about it now, so we’ll see where that goes.

Speaking of Lulu, Ottmar Hitzfeld, who currently manages Switzerland after an extremely successful Bundesliga coaching career, has some lovely things to say about him. Not a bad person to have complimenting you.

In other news, the team’s back in Berlin after a nice trip to sunny Spain. The final friendly was a 2-2 draw against Young Boys Bern, Voronin and Domovchiyski scoring towards the end of the first half and second half respectively. Also worth noting is that Bryan Arguez started the game, being replaced in the 77th minute by youngster Florian Riedel. Arguez is an interesting topic- the young American was signed about this time last year and was talked up as going straight into the first team. That hasn’t exactly happened, amid rumors of disciplinary issues at Hertha. He was even sent away from the US U-20 national team for disciplinary issues a few weeks ago. There were rumors that he was going to be leaving, but it looks like he’s been back in favor throughout the Marbella training camp. I hope he gets his head together, because it seems like he’s got talent to actually make it if he does.

It’s still over a week until the Bundesliga starts up again- it feels like it’s been forever since we’ve played a game. Maximilian Nicu says that we can pick up where we left off, and I hope he’s right…

Interesting news that Arguez started. Hope he grows up soon before he blows his chance. The Hitzfield article link doesn’t work, though. :/

Abby, as an aside, your deadpan delivery never fails to make me chuckle.

I read the story about Chipper failing his physical and thought of you and your byline that you didn’t know what to make of transfers. I laughed out loud–I thought this kind of stuff only happened to me.

Whups! Sorry, Juliet, it’s fixed now. And I agree with you on Arguez- I want him to make it.

My record is pretty ridiculous on this account, Chris. But it’d be really hard to write a blog on a team (especially during winter break) without writing about the transfer rumors…
