No Surprises
By: Abby | January 30th, 2008But nice to see anyway. I don’t count a game as won until the whistle blows, and I don’t count a player as signed before it’s announced on a club website. Either club, really.
Finally, the transfer of Bryan Arguez is confirmed. From DC Washington United, no less. He’s signed a contract until 2011 (I’m going with the German website, which has 2011 listed, and hopefully this new signing will make the English page updated a little more often/accurately). It’s all very exciting for us American Hertha fans, and I for one desperately hope he does well. Helps out the USMNT (eventually) and Hertha (sooner), which all in all is a good thing.
But I’m not biased, really. I’m equally hopeful for new loan signing Valeri Domovchiyski. The Bulgarian joins until the end of the season from Levski Sofia, with an option to buy after that. He has an excellent scoring record at Sofia and was scouted by several Premier League clubs, most notably Blackburn, who was leading the chase until somehow it collapsed and we swooped in. He’ll be wearing the number 23 shirt.
The transfer for Gilberto to Tottenham seems all but a formality, with it already being talked about in the English press as finished. They quote the fee at £2 million, which would be pretty awesome.
And finally, Hertha won their final friendly of the winter break 7-0, at Oberliga (that’s the league the Hertha reservevs play in) side Germania Schöneiche. Ede scored, Ebert scored, Sofian Chahed scored somehow, and Pante and Solomon Okoronkwo scored two. Full match report here, and like all match reports on the English website, it has a heading celebrating the 3-1 win over Stuttgart from August. Which I actually was at. It still amuses me, though.
Anyway, we’re now only a few days from Frankfurt, which means I have to remember how to write up a match preview. Wish me (and Hertha, of course) luck!

Well, a lot of clubs have the tradition of retiring numbers of famous players. Maybe Hertha has a tradition of retiring headlines of famous matches. I mean by Hertha standards beating Stuttgart 3-1 is a pretty awesome result.

? Strange story. Too bad, would have been great for money’s sake. I hope he’ll play at least a more motivated second half of the season.

*throws up hands* I give up. Rumor in England according to the Guardian is that he failed a medical, but now they’re reporting this Kicker story that says it’s back on. I can’t keep track.

We have to keep cool. It’s going all around now and nobody knows what comes next. I think we will have at least one surprise for sure.
