Oh my God is this done yet?
By: Abby | July 29th, 2008I am, of course, speaking of the ongoing transfer saga of 19-year-old Tunisian Amine Chermiti. I talked about him being all but signed back in May. And then waited. And waited. And waited.
I think the problem was actually discussing it when it was that close- I jinx transfers that way. (I have a lot of weird fixations with jinxes). But it seemed to finally be coming to a close- last week, in the comments to my last post, Rami, the blogger over at Tunisia World Cup Blog, said that he was on the way. So I’ve been checking the Hertha website ever since, just waiting for it to show up.
According to the Berliner Morgenpost, he was supposed to be announced yesterday. It seems to be something of an open secret- everyone thinks the deal is signed and ready and set, but…for some reason, he’s not in Berlin. The German press claim that Etoile du Sahel won’t give him up, that they want him for upcoming international competition (although it seems that he wasn’t at the most recent Confederations Cup match, judging by a line in this article). I have no idea. I would just like this to actually be concluded.
Let’s take a look at what we’re hopefully getting…
But just in case something screws this up (and even if it doesn’t), we’ve also got the Ghanian league top scorer, Eric Bekoe, on trial.

Well, from the video, he looks like a nice find. I hope you guys actually get him! It’d be nice to see Hertha taking some names and kicking some butt in the UEFA Cup.

If Hertha get both Chermiti and Valdivia they’ll have a very exciting squad. They could be the surprise team of the new season.

Hey Abby. Infosfoot is saying that the Hertha president is getting very frustrated with this delay. What’s happened according to the article I’m linking below is that Etoile is asking for an extra 15 percent to help cover the 20 percent “formation” fee that Jeunesse Sportive Kairouanaise (JSK, Amine’s former club) gets as part of the signing. The article also says that nothing has been abandoned. I haven’t lost hope but I have to say that if this doesn’t happen I don’t know what it will do to Amine’s morale. He’s very ready to leave and has his heart set on Hertha specifically. He got plenty of other offers (including a last minute one from Saudi that dwarfs the Hertha sum) but stuck to your team. I’m just waiting to write about this being done. I hope it’s not all in vain!

That’s quite a complex transfer triangle. Hertha reportedly have a transfer budget of €9m for this season thanks to the marketing deal with Sportfive. After adding up the comings and goings so far, those €9m are still roughly intact.
Hertha want to buy both Chermiti and Valdivia. I think Palmeiras want €10m for Valdivia and according to a Berlin newspaper Etoile have bumped the asking price for Chermiti to €3m.
Hertha supposedly offered Palmeiras to buy only 60% of Valdivia’s transfer rights for €6m but Palmeiras don’t like that idea. So as it stands Hertha are missing roughly €4m in their budget. Without any player sales they’ll have to pick either Valdivia or Chermiti.
The transfer window will be open until August 31st, so this can drag on for a while.
