Planning for the Future

By: Abby | May 6th, 2009

It’s hard to comprehend that we’re four games away from the end of the season, and in just a short time the transfer window will be opened. The final games have taken on such importance and our final place in the table is still so up in the air that I can’t even think of the time beyond the next game.

But we are a few games away from the end of the season, and close to the opening of the transfer window, and even though the press is as absorbed in the end-of-season dramatics as I am, it doesn’t mean there aren’t still transfer rumors circulating. (I think it takes even more than a five-or-six way title race to do that.)

Our top priority will probably be a striker. Pantelic is likely to be off, and while it’s still possible we’ll keep Voronin, it isn’t guaranteed. Even if we do keep the ponytailed one, we’ll still need another striker. According to various sources, we’ve already made contact with Lucas Barrios’ people. The Argentine has been quite prolific for Chilean club Colo Colo, scoring 37 goals in 38 games. He’s even given an interview saying how much he wants to join us. But nothing is confirmed, and apparently Borussia Dortmund and Werder Bremen are also eying him.

We’re also, apparently, interested in Romanian midfielder Cristian Tanase. He’s 22 years old, plays for FC Argeş Piteşti, and apparently they’ve looked at the league table and think that we’re like other clubs in the 3rd place of their league standings and can spend €4 million on their midfielder.

The oddest rumor was that we’re interested in Marko Marin. Without a doubt the pint-sized German international will be in high demand next season, even if ‘Gladbach manage to avoid the drop. And without a doubt he’d be a great signing for us. But seriously, we’re not going to be the ones getting him. Even if we do get some of that sweet, sweet Champions League money.

Also, we apparently had a teenage Portuguese defender on trial?

It’s not just incoming, though. Rumor is that Felix Magath wants to use his new Schalke money to buy our not-Brazilian Gojko Kacar. With the season we’ve had we’re sure to see some rumors/offers coming in to some of our best and brightest – Gojko, Joe Simunic, Drobny, etc. The hope is that we can keep them and build for the future. Keeping them would go a long way to making this season more than some wonderful, magical fluke…

Well I am in Koln right now. It has been a pretty dreary day here. Thank goodness Novakovic is out for FC Koln. Hopefully we can get the three points and maybe Leverkusen and Dortmund get results. Cant wait to see the Hertha contigent of supporters.
