Speculation Not Involving A Brazilian
By: Abby | December 21st, 2007Or even a Swiss, for that matter. Shocking, I know! Thanks to Juliet for tipping me off.
DC United first-round draft pick Bryan Arguez is off to Berlin for a two-week workout/trial (depending on what source you read). I know nothing about the player, but apparently he’s young, just shy of his 19th birthday, but tall (6′2″) and strong. He’s been involved in the various youth international levels, but has yet to play for the DC United first team. He’ll be arriving on January 3rd to join the training camp.
It’s not much of news, but that Hoeness and Favre are looking towards American youth players is a good thing, in my opinion. Partially because I’m a bit selfish and it’s nice to see countrymen abroad and at teams I like, but also because it makes good sense. Americans have done well in the Bundesliga before, and a tall physical midfielder is always a useful thing. Also, it’s likely that American youth internationals are a bit more inexpensive than European ones. The best ones are eager to prove themselves as well. Whether Arguez is actually any good or not, or whether Hertha will really be interested in him or not, that we’re looking at the US for a source of new players is encouraging.
In other news, Andre Lima might be heading back to Botafogo on loan. He hasn’t exactly set the Bundesliga alight, and with the arrival of Raffael imminent it may be better for Lima to go somewhere else to play.
And in good-striker news, Marko Pantelic has been voted into Kicker’s team of the first half of the season. Hurray for Marko! He’s been great this season so far, and I’ll love to see him with more of the same next half.
No game tomorrow, so no game preview today. Instead, I’ll be watching the North London derby, which is Dan’s to cover. Or Richard’s, I guess, if you’re into that sort of thing.

More opportunities abroad can only encourage more American youth to pursue soccer, which is definitely a good thing.
