You Say Training, I Say Trial

By: Abby | January 17th, 2008

Sources are indicating that Bryan Arguez is all but signed for Hertha. As I mentioned before, Arguez was supposed to (according to US sources anyway) be in Berlin/Tenerife only for a training session, but he’s impressed so much that it looks as if he’s going to be signed up anyway. Transfer fee is supposed to be in the $350,000-$400,000 range. With the exchange rate that’s probably about twelve euros. Mini-Ronaldinho?

I kid, I kid. But if that is the transfer fee being paid, it makes me happy on several levels. As a fan of American soccer, it means that another young kid is getting a chance to go abroad and participate in one of the major leagues. He’ll learn a lot more with Hertha than he will at MLS (sorry, MLS fans). Additionally, as a Hertha fan, gaining a young, talented, strong defensive midfielder for under €500,000 is pretty awesome. If we’re going to reduce our debt and gain a future that doesn’t involve more deals like the Sportfive one that was just renewed, this is the way to go- unearthing unknown players for fairly inexpensive fees.

The other probable new signing, Ljubomir Fejsa, is allegedly having a medical test as we speak and should be announced as a signing shortly- in Germany it’s being reported that it’s already done, but I’m superstitious and I’m not saying anything until it’s declared.

Also, Dieter Hoeness is saying that we could have had Pato a year and a half ago, if we’d had €3.5 million to spend on him. Just to cut any of us down who might have been feeling optimistic about things bei Hertha.

The story about Pato is so awkward. What does he want to say with this?

No idea. Prove he has connections? Make people talk about him a little? He confuses me at the best of times, so…

“What does he want to say with this?”

I am a manager who is very insecure about his legacy. My greatest fear is, that my Hertha days could be considered a failure. I could have gifted the Bundesliga a second Diego, if only someone other than me hadn’t wasted those €3.5m. And don’t anybody tell me, I continuously waste those €3.5m on players like Andre Lima.
